Song Of The Day: Statik Selektah - Play The Game (feat. Big KRIT & Freddie Gibbs)…
How refreshing on a Friday morning! Two of my favorites over the best DJ Premier tribute band in the biz. And they’re rapping about some deep shit to boot. This can only mean one thing: I’m getting some NEW pussy tonight.
That interesting fact and my personal bias aside, this is a real good song. It’s more of a KRIT produced by Statik and featuring Gibbs thing, but that’s still a good thing. KRIT employs his well-worn earnest tone to detail the hardships of his childhood and his eventual come-up in the rap game before switching to shit-talking in his second verse, while Gangsta Gibbs does what he does on wax: a rapid fire reflection on his past life as a dealer. Gibbs’ verse is especially impressive because of the way he swings from guilt to enlightenment and from remorse to defiance all within one verse. Selling poison to your own people because you need to feed you and yours strikes me as some complex shit and Gibbs does a great job of expressing that in his verse.
Then again, it’s Friday. So maybe you should keep this one for your hangover on Sunday morning and fuck with some Juicy J instead. Coonery is necessary on the weekends…
