Song of the Day: Mobb Deep - Apostle’s Warning…
This song is dedicated to a twitter acquaintance of mine. He calls himself “Antdeshawn” and last night he slandered one of the god MCs: Prodigy.
Obviously, I’m one of the biggest Mobb Deep stans on the planet (check the usernames), but I’ll readily admit that Bandana P hasn’t been the same since about 2001 (basically circa ‘Infamy’). He still has his moments here and there, but he focuses more on cadence and delivery these days as opposed to his prior proclivity for issuing some of the most nihilistic and violent, yet gem-filled verses we’ve ever heard in rap.
I’ve said it before and I’ll continue to say it - by the time the Mobb dropped ‘Murda Muzik’, Prodigy was easily a top 5 MC and was on the cusp of GOAT conversations after he dropped ‘HNIC’. Simply put, no one else had ever been as technically adept, consistently menacing and jaded on wax as Prodigy was from 1994 to 2001 (Snoop was close, but he stopped rapping in 1996 and a lot of other candidates were much more proficient in other areas of rap). We shouldn’t let the fact that he’s been only slightly above average since then cloud the memory of one of the best runs in rap music.
I could basically post ANY Mobb Deep song from 94 to 2001 to make my point. Illuminati P sounds at home on tracks with anyone ranging from Nas and Big Pun to LL Cool J and even fuckin Mariah Carey! And this was in an era when niggas just didn’t collabo for the sake of doing so - you had to be nice. Not to mention the FACT that Prodigy’s voice/verses might be the most sampled by OTHER MCs in hip-hop history (even his supposed nemesis, Jay-Z, has sampled P’s voice). The man probably has the most memorable openings to verses in this rap shit (“I got you stuck off the realness…”) and cats in 2011 just casually toss off opinions like “I never heard a good Prodigy verse.” That’s probably YOUR fault.
Educate yourselves and stop talking shit. You just sound stupid. There’s a reason why Prodigy still has devoted fans 17 years after he started making music. I bet you won’t be able to say the same for a lot of the clowns you listen to now in 5 years.
Then again, Antdeshawn was probably just being a troll. Fuck the internet…

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you just wrote, I use to tell cats back when I was in high school that Prodigy was top 5 MCs around after I heard Murda Muzik drop, not many cats were on his level, I was such a Prodigy stan growing up.
