Gangsta Gibbs on classic albums…
You’ll observe that he mentions Erykah Badu (like many of us, he’s obsessed with the #BaduBox and #BaduEyes and #BaduMuzik), which he’s done before, but more interestingly, he gives glowing praise to Nas and ‘Illmatic’. This is the first time I’ve heard him even mention NasGawd and I’ve probably read/watched every Gibbs interview floating around on the net (I won’t apologize for this. Pause.).
In most cases, the interviewer would ask him who his influences or favorites are and he’d usually name check Scarface, Tupac, UGK and some Midwest OGs that escape me at the moment. On occasion, he’s been complimentary towards other MCs ranging from Kid Cudi to Jay-Z (more often than not, he’s been less than polite towards most of the soft serve twat chasing drones that are winning at the moment), but never anything about the god MC. It’s nice to see that he never just had a reason to namecheck Nas until now. I think it’s cool when 2 artists you’re a fan of have a mutual appreciation for each other beyond the fact that they’re on the same label or that DJ Khaled badgered them into working together.
I mean, you can tell from the way Gibbs raps that he’s well versed (pun intended?) and learned with regards to this rap shit, but his biggest technical influences are probably Midwest speed rap and Southern Hook construction before you get to pure East Coast lyricism. Not that these rap strains all exist in a vacuum, but I’m trying to come up with a logical reason (that goes beyond “that’s what he grew up on”) for Gibbs to complement some influences more than others.
Now if Nas & Gibbs ever work together? Woooooooo! Fuck this blog - there’ll be no need for all this rambling any more. Especially if someone like The Alchemist or Just Blaze is involved. But not to worry, that shit won’t happen. Cool shit rarely happens in rap.
A nigga can dream though…
