Song of the Day: The Product - I’m A…

While writing that Game post from last week, I got the idea to start anointing some of the more understated albums from the last 5 - 10 years as classics. Yeah, I know it really isn’t my place and no one died and made me the ultimate judge of musical value, but I feel that arrogant at the moment. #Shrug.
In any case, the folks at the Barbershop were bumping ‘G Type’, an Alchemist produced track from this project (Scarface Presents The Product - One Hunid) and I knew in that instant that I’d be writing about the song/album in the near future. My initial choice was ‘G Type’, but shockingly I couldn’t find a Youtube video to embed, so I decided to spring for the song above. Ironically, ‘I’m A’ is easily the most “frivolous” song on the project and it’s pretty excellent anyway (Plus it comes with a decent video with scenes from parts of Houston I’ve yet to discover. I’ll probably keep the status quo on that shit. ROFL.) I mention irony because the entire project is pretty high on lyrical and gullyness quotients. Uncle Face always knocks it out of the park and his young recruits (Willie Hen outta San Francisco and Young Malice outta Mississippi) are very skilled as well.
There’s also a lot of soul searching and reflection through the CD’s runtime. These men are deep thinkers and adept communicators. At least via rap verses - I don’t know them like that. Pause. Another impressive feature of One Hunid is the cohesion of the production. Outside of The Alchemist’s contribution on ’G Type’ (which really isn’t out of place on the set anyway), Face and Co mostly stick with low key names (West Coast Vet - Tone Capone along with J.Bido - don’t know a thing about the latter) and self-productions. The result is a subdued vibe that suits the topics at hand.
It’s been way too long since I listened to this album in its entirety, so I’ll go do that for the 2nd time today and I’ll suggest that you do the same. And while you’re at it, consider if this 2006 release sounds great enough now to qualify as classic material. It still sounds excellent to me and it’s a tragedy that we haven’t heard more from this collective in that last 5 years…
