Song of the Day: Freddie Gibbs - B.A.N.ned…
I don’t have a ton to say today. Too busy with work/listening to this Gibbs tape (with the occasional ASAP Rocky detour - maybe I’ll offer thoughts later). I’ll say this much though; Gibbs has an amazing amount of chemistry with Cardo - who I first heard via Wiz Khalifa. Cardo’s trademark seems to be a random snare hit that sounds a bit like a cowbell (I need more cowbell!). This song is probably the “weakest” (I use that term VERY lightly) of the Gibbs/Cardo collaborations on Cold Day In Hell, but it’s superb anyway. I suppose you can’t ever go wrong with a Sade sample and I think Cardo goes that route twice (check the more obvious vocal chop on ‘My Homeboy’s Girlfriend’ - an example of the visceral story-telling that I think any candidates for GOAT MC must have in their arsenal). Gibbs just demolishes this shit (and whoever he’s talking to on this shit) and tops it off with the most playful bridge juxtaposed against the most brutal of insults for a hook. This nigga NICE.
The larger point I get from bumping #CDH is that Gibbs is an MC that isn’t really afraid to take risks. At this point, he’s rapped over every imaginable style of beat (popular or not) available to any rapper that’s looking. Hopefully, he’ll get to drop a retail album in the near future and he’ll return to some of his best collaborators - i.e., The Alchemist, DJ Burn One, Fingeroll, Josh The Goon, Blockbeataz, and now, Cardo. I mean, that should be part of the point of making so much free material, right?
Go get Cold Day In Hell. You won’t regret it…
