Re: Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Section 80’…
I can’t really explain why it took so long for Kendrick Lamar to register on my iPod (seriously, I basically disliked the man’s music for most of the year - described it as “Nyquil rap” when I was at my most slanderous), but I’ll be damned if this project didn’t end up being one of my favorite things to listen to this year.
I suspect that my initial resistance to Kendrick’s music has to do with the fact that he was a West Coast MC getting a TON of hype and attention (see the affiliation with Dre and guest spot on ‘Take Care’) without fitting into my preconceived notions of what a popular West Coast rapper ought to sound like, i.e., gansta shit, party shit or both. I just didn’t sense enough anger or energy to match my initial expectations.
Yeah, my bad. Kendrick Lamar is a problem. A problem in the same way those Hiero and Pharcyde niggas were. Or a more technically adept but far less visual/visceral/hilarious Ice Cube shaped problem. Certainly a good problem that I hope we have for a long time.
This is where I admit that it was KL’s verse on the ‘Buried Alive Interlude’ off Beige Nigga’s ‘Take Care’ that led me back to ‘Section 80’. I might not listen to Drake’s shit anymore, but I’m thankful that it at least inspired me to pick ‘Section 80’ one last time. I think I get it now. Consider me a fan.
And with that, my year end reviews/lists/rants/random observations have begun. Send in questions and comments; I promise to try and make this somewhat interesting…

Yeah…it took me a while too. I think it had something to do with the hype coming from so many unreliable mouths as well as the “soft” vibe. But no doubt that shit is legit
