Song of the Day: Slim Thug - Welcome To Houston (feat. EVERY FUCKIN BODY)…
I should really do this shit more often. I’m a little busy these days though. My sad.
Anyway, the more time I spend in Houston, the more I become attached to and defensive of the rap scene down here. That said, I still favor a lot of the artists I was first exposed to during that Houston explosion in the early to mid 2000s (I think it goes without saying that I fux with Facemob, UGK and the more obscure 90s niggas too). Slim Thug was and remains my favorite of this crop of artists - Trae is a close second, but Thugga is #1.
I remember bumping Slim Thug’s “Boss of All Bosses” album back in 2009 when I spent my summer working outchea and thinking it was an excellent piece of work. However, I’m right in the middle of listening to it for the first time since my permanent move to Houston and it sounds so much better now, given my increased familiarity with the city, the slang and the people. I’ve lived in a lot of cities, but never one with such a vibrant rap culture and I have to say - I’m loving this shit.
So in lieu of actually writing about the song of the day, I’ll just leave this here (pause-worthy hook and all) as a small love letter to the city I live in. Humidity, fat folks, shitty roads and all. Hopefully, I’ll get around to writing a proper ode someday. Maybe when I lock down a curly-haired girl that can make plantains 30 different ways…
