Tyler, the Creator - Goblin (Mini-Review)…
![]()
Because I’m not an idiot, I’ve actually taken some time to check out a good chunk of the stuff from the Odd Future collective. Some of it I’ve liked a lot (Mike G, Casey Veggies and Frank Ocean), some I’ve liked less (Tyler and Earl) and some I just haven’t gotten around to yet (MellowHype and Domo Genesis). The ironic thing is that the MCs that have gotten the most attention and critical acclaim (Tyler and Earl) are the one’s that leave me most indifferent at this time - even though I recognize their talents.
In any event, I was still looking forward to bumping Tyler’s ‘Goblin’. I wasn’t expecting to be blow away on some Illmatic type shit, but I was hoping to add yet another talented MC to the rotation. In lieu of a proper review, I’ll just paraphrase some of the comments I made about ‘Goblin’ while listening to it and posting comments at Nah Right instead of giving the white man the work he pays me for:
“Dude can rap and has a dope voice [ll], but I already knew that”
“The beats sound like what Pharrell would make if he never met the Asian and never got any pussy. Ever.”
“You can’t stretch a punk rock/fuck you attitude over 6 minute songs. There’s a reason why punk rock songs are short. Aggression works best when you abide by the “half as short, twice as strong” principle.”
“I’m not listening to the rest of this shit.”
The last comment was around the 8th song or so. I probably need to give it another chance, but I think it’s fair to say that I didn’t really like that shit. That doesn’t mean it’s bad - it just means that this opinionated asshole in this tiny, irrelevant corner of the internet did not like ‘Goblin’.
In fact, he thinks it’s kinda wack. Meh…
