Timely question. Thanks for asking too - I’m bored as fuck right now.
For those who don’t know who Kreayshawn is, click this shit right quick: LINK.
Aight. Y’all watched it? Good.
First, I can’t front - I fucking like that song. It’s catchy as shit and I like the attitude on display. I hear she’s somehow connected to Lil’ B - which is a little ironic given that Based Gawd has never made anything this commercially viable during his reign. But enough about that nigga.
I’m with you dun/duniress. The shit is catchy as fuck, but it rubs me the wrong way as well. It’s hard to divorce this kind of shit from the context in which it emerges. People will say shit like “it’s just music” or “race shouldn’t matter”, but it’s NOT just music and race does matter. No matter how watered down this hip-hop shit gets, some of us still live this shit on a very deep level.
I’m a black man in America that still remembers when the mainstream said that this thing of ours would never last and that it was just “niggers talking over noise” - so it’s always going to be weird for me to see my exact sociological opposite (a white girl) eating off rap. I’m sorry if that makes me seem like some kind of racist or whatever other label you can think of but I’ll own that shit.
I mean, she popped up with this shit earlier this month and rumor has it that Sony or some other label already has a million dollar offer on the table for her. Meanwhile muthafuckas that are more talented and have been grinding for much longer (but infinitely less marketable because they aren’t white girls) are going to stay starving and filling out applications at UPS. Yeah, it rubs me the wrong way too. The shit smells all the way like Cultural Tourism 101. As one of my twitter niggas put it - “she reminds of the cool white girls in high school that used to smoke weed and let all the niggas hit.” That’s a horribly sexist thing to repeat but it’s true - so maybe it’s not all bad. If all the niggas hit, then the least the universe owes the Kreayshawns of the planet is million dollar record deals off ONE viral hit.
And I’m not even going to get into her saying/typing “nigga” and shit. I dont have the energy for that analytical grenade.
Call me naive, but there’s gotta be more to this rap music shit than this corny shit, right?
But as a caveat of sorts, if she keeps making hits then it’s all good with me. After all, we allowed Rick Rawse to become a viable rapper too. It’s all about the music - right.
I ain’t mad at her at all though. That’s the game…
