Song of the Day: Young Jeezy feat. Freddie Gibbs - Do It For You…
Here’s the 2nd collaboration between Gangsta Gibbs and the Snowman. ‘Run DMC’ wasn’t my cup of tea initially, but it grew on me and is one of my favorite tracks in 2011 (the other favorites are all Juicy J songs - no lie. WE TRIPPY MANE!) This track does a much better job of fulfilling the expectations I had of these two artists. I love anti-social rap more than the next person, but ‘Do It For You’ has just the right amount of nuance and depth you’d expect from a Freddie Gibbs track - not to say that Jeezy is incapable of the same - he just plays that role a little less often than Gibbs.
Speaking of nuance, the production credits I saw for this mixtape indicate that the beat is a Lil’ Lody beat. Call me a jackass, but I find that hard to believe. I’ve come to see Lody as more than a mere Lex Luger clone, but I refuse to believe that he’s already capable of this level of subtlety. Then again, I never thought that Lex Luger would make a song like this either. So maybe I’m wrong (isn’t it ridiculous how I support one idea and flip on it almost instantly? I think I’m John Kerry, Mitt Romney, typing crap, hallelujah and so on. Definitely not that moron Weiner [ll] though).
In the absence of any kind of proper transition, I’ll just say that Jeezy’s latest effort deserves a listen. It’s not as good as ‘Trap or Die 2’, but it’s very solid - especially if you’re part of his core fan base (I’m a fan, but I’m not in that core. I still hear synths and get a stank face on occasion. May my inner rap snob live long)…
Brief programming note: It’s the summer and there’s just a lot more to do in what used to be my free time, so posting might remain a little light - but keep visiting and keep the questions coming. That’s what Jesus would do…
