Re: Young Buck…
(This is one of my responses in a conversation with a friend about Young Buck - who apparently made some sort of song about Amy Winehouse or something - I didn’t listen. My friend seems to think that there’s still hope for Buck and that he’s really THAT talented. The response was long enough to qualify as some shit for people to read, so here it is).
Buck played himself by not staying on top of his business and even worse, becoming a drug addict. That’s just pathetic. He wasn’t emphatically the best MC in G-Unit (50 made better hooks, Banks had more intricate verses and Yayo was much more ignorant), but while they were on top he was my favorite because he was the most balanced one in the group. He actually sounded as if he cared about the shit he was writing. Sort of like a utility knife and his accent also meant he didn’t sound out of place collaborating with what was at the time the new breed of MCs (read - Southern). His first album was sorely underrated - I’d be bumping it right now if I didn’t just lose 80,000 song (yep - these things happen to me).
But I don’t root for junkies. I can’t respect that shit. And I don’t think Buck is/was talented or mercurial enough to get away with that shit. 50’s success wasn’t a by product of marketing and collaborations. That guy was always going to win - largely because he’s a more talented MC/Rapper/Whatever you want to call it than the likes of Young Buck. Plus he was more determined and disciplined about his craft.
I don’t see how Buck gets back in the game on any substantial level. Too bad he didn’t at least have enough solo success and name recognition to keep annoying us like The Game…
