Song of the Day: El Prez - UAINTUPONTHIS! (feat. U-N-I & Danja)…
If you’ve paid any attention to this space during the last few week, you’ll remember that I lost 80,000 songs/an entire external hard drive a little while ago. There’s really no positive way to spin that shit. It fucking sucked and continues to suck. However, I had a spare external hard drive that just happened to hold the foundations of my music collection (Nas/Jay/Kast/Premier/Pete Rock discographies and so on). In addition, this hard drive happens to have some music that never made it on to the newer hard drive I lost a few weeks. A bunch of songs that I probably hadn’t heard in about 3 years.
This gem is one of those songs. This was essentially the theme song to my first year of grad school. I didn’t know who any of these guys were at the time I heard this shit, but I got familiar in due time. Ended up copping El Prez’s ‘Prezanomics’ and I’ve tried to keep up with his work since then. Unfortunately, he hasn’t really kicked on in the intervening years - but I suppose that’s better than the fate that befell U-N-I. They straight broke up and got on some other shit. Thankfully, I wasn’t all that into their music, so it doesn’t suck that much. Dale Danja (not to be confused with the guy that spent a stint producing with Timbaland - I can’t be sure though, all niggas look alike to me) did another project with El Prez and has a project on his bandcamp page, but that’s a fairly meagre output over 3 years.
When I heard this shit, I thought I had heard the future of Cali rap, but I suspect that some slightly newer jacks have filled that void in the last two years (Kendrick Lamar, Dom Kennedy). Still, I hold out hope that El Prez and Dale Danja can make some noise in the future. Regardless of what happens, I’ll always have this jammin ass track…
