Nas & Lauryn Hill - If I Ruled The World (Live Performance)…
This is neither the best quality video nor an obscure song. I’m fairly certain that there’s nothing I know about this song that anyone else that reads this blog doesn’t know as well (see how much I respect you mugs?).
I’m posting this for an entirely different reason: I’ve always wondered why rap concerts don’t share more in common with live in-studio performances. Look at how cool and relaxed Nas and Ms. Hill are during that performance. Listen to the quality of the vocals. The shit comes off all suave and proper like. If I happened to be in the the studio in which this performance was recorded, I’d be enjoying the fuck outta myself [ll] and cookin with no regard for my reputation (#based). Instead of shit like this, what we get is usually excessive bass and rappers YELLING into the mic. I understand that the MC has to bring energy to the proceedings, but rap concerts seem to sacrifice way too much sound quality and vocal technique for getting the crowd hyped.
Maybe I’m a little too nerdy about this shit. In any case, I (along with most of the crowd) am usually too drunk or otherwise altered to care that much, so maybe rappers have the right idea anyway. I certainly don’t see shit changing for a while…
